How to Pass Your K53 Learners Test: Tips & What to Expect

Passing your K53 learners licence test is the first step towards getting your driver’s licence in South Africa. Many people fail on their first attempt simply because they don’t know what to expect. This guide will help you prepare properly so you can pass first time.

What Is the K53 Learners Test?

The K53 learners licence test is a written multiple-choice exam administered at your local traffic department. In Pretoria, you can write at the Pretoria North or Centurion testing stations. The test covers:

  • Road signs – You must know all regulatory, warning and information signs
  • Rules of the road – Right of way, following distances, speed limits and more
  • Vehicle controls – Basic knowledge of how a vehicle operates

How Many Questions Are on the K53 Learners Test?

The test has 64 questions in total. You need to answer correctly:

  • At least 22 out of 24 questions on road signs
  • At least 28 out of 32 questions on rules of the road
  • At least 6 out of 8 questions on vehicle controls

You must pass all three sections to obtain your learners licence – passing only some sections is not enough.

Top Tips to Pass Your K53 Learners Test

1. Study the Official K53 Manual

The official K53 learners licence manual is available at most bookshops for around R80–R120. Every single question in the test comes from this book. Study it thoroughly, especially the road signs section as this is where most people fail.

2. Practice With Online Tests

There are several free K53 practice test websites and apps available. Take as many practice tests as possible until you are consistently scoring above 90%. The more familiar you are with the format and wording of questions, the better you will do on test day.

3. Focus on Road Signs First

Road signs is the section with the strictest pass mark (22 out of 24). There are over 350 road signs you could be tested on. Learn the three categories – regulatory signs (round), warning signs (triangular) and informatory signs (rectangular) – and study what each one means.

4. Book Early

Learners test slots at Pretoria and Centurion traffic departments get booked up quickly. Book your test as soon as you feel ready – don’t wait until the last minute. Bring your green ID book or smart ID card and proof of your residential address.
