How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need Before My Test in South Africa?

One of the most common questions we get at Driving R Us is: “How many driving lessons do I need before I can take my driver’s licence test?” The honest answer is – it depends. But this guide will give you a realistic idea of what to expect.

The Short Answer

Most people need between 20 and 40 driving lessons before they are ready to pass their K53 driver’s licence road test. However, this varies greatly depending on:

  • Whether you have any prior driving experience
  • How often you practise between lessons
  • Your natural aptitude and confidence behind the wheel
  • The quality of instruction you receive

What Does a Driving Lesson Involve?

A standard driving lesson with Driving R Us lasts approximately 1 hour. During your lessons you will progressively learn:

  • Vehicle controls – clutch, gears, brakes, steering
  • Starting and stopping – smooth acceleration and braking
  • Turning and reversing – including the three-point turn and parallel parking
  • Road rules in practice – right of way, intersections, traffic circles
  • K53 test manoeuvres – the specific techniques required for the road test

Why the K53 Test Has Specific Requirements

South Africa uses the K53 defensive driving method, which has very specific techniques that examiners look for during the road test. These include:

  • Checking mirrors every 5–8 seconds
  • Performing the MSPSL routine (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look) before every manoeuvre
  • Correct hand positioning on the steering wheel
  • Proper following distances

Even experienced drivers who have driven for years often need lessons because the K53 method is different from how most people naturally drive.

Tips to Get Test-Ready Faster

Practise Between Lessons

If you have a licenced driver who can supervise you, practise as much as possible between your formal lessons. Even 20 minutes of driving per day will accelerate your progress significantly.

Ask Questions

Don’t be shy to ask your instructor to explain anything you don’t understand. The more you understand why you are doing something, the easier it is to remember under test pressure.

Book Your Test When Your Instructor Says You’re Ready

Trust your instructor’s assessment. Booking your test too early is one of the most common reasons people fail. Our instructors at Driving R Us will only recommend you book when they are confident you are ready to pass.

How Long Does the Driver’s Licence Road Test Take?

The road test typically takes about 30–45 minutes and is conducted by a licensed examiner from the traffic department. It includes a yard test (three-point turn, parallel parking) and a road test through local streets.
