One of the most frustrating experiences is arriving at the traffic department for your driver’s licence test only to be turned away because you’re missing a document. This guide covers everything you need to bring for both your learners test and your driver’s licence road test in South Africa.
Documents for Your K53 Learners Licence Test
When you go to write your learners test at the traffic department, bring the following:
- Original green barcoded ID book or smart ID card (copies are not accepted)
- Proof of residential address – not older than 3 months (utility bill, bank statement, or letter from your municipality)
- Completed application form (LL-1) – available at the traffic department or online
- Two recent passport-size photographs (taken within the last 3 months)
- Application fee – approximately R140–R160 (cash or card depending on the testing station)
Important: If you are under 18, you will also need written consent from your parent or legal guardian.
Documents for Your Driver’s Licence Road Test
Once you have your learners licence and are ready to take your driver’s licence road test, you need:
- Original learners licence certificate – must still be valid (not expired)
- Original green ID book or smart ID card
- Completed application form (DL-1) – available at the traffic department
- Two recent passport-size photographs
- Application fee – approximately R180–R250
- A roadworthy vehicle for the test – if you are using your own vehicle, it must have a valid licence disc and be in roadworthy condition
Note: If you book through Driving R Us, we provide the vehicle for your road test as part of our training packages.
How Long Is a Learners Licence Valid?
Your learners licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue. You must pass your driver’s licence road test within this period. If your learners licence expires, you will need to write the learners test again.
What If I Don’t Have a Fixed Address?
Proof of address is a common stumbling block. Acceptable documents include:
- An electricity, water or rates bill in your name
- A bank statement (issued by the bank, not printed online in some cases)
- A letter from your municipality confirming your address
- A lease agreement signed by both tenant and landlord
- An affidavit confirming your address, stamped at a police station
Can I Use a Foreign ID or Passport?
Foreign nationals can apply for a South African learners and driver’s licence using:
- A valid foreign passport
- A valid South African work or study permit
- Proof of address in South Africa
If you already hold a valid foreign driver’s licence, there is a separate conversion process – speak to your local traffic department for details.
Tips for a Smooth Traffic Department Visit
- Arrive early – Traffic departments get busy quickly. Aim to arrive 30–45 minutes before opening time
- Bring originals and copies – Always bring certified copies of your ID and proof of address in addition to the originals
- Check the specific requirements of your local testing station as requirements can vary slightly between stations
- Book ahead – Many testing stations in Pretoria now require appointments. Check the Pretoria North or Centurion testing station requirements before you go
